The "You're Not Serious If You Don't Overspend" Mindset

I've been around the creator space for quite a bit of time, and one of the things I hear constantly is that if you don't buy the higher price tier of service, then you're not serious about getting your business going.

It Costs More, Must Be Better

I don't know when this mindset came into being. Was it back in the years pre-COVID? Not entirely sure, but it seems to have been something that many of those in more influencer positions have taken as their mantra: by spending more, you get better value.

This mindset is highly risky, especially for someone who is just in the process of getting their business up and running. Not only are you spending a lot of money setting up your business organization (LLC and the like), but it also means you're having to worry about insurance, advertising, and all manner of things in the business startup phase. Add in that you have people telling you that you need to be buying these higher priced tier subscriptions if you are really wanting to be serious about your business.

Starting a Business is Risky

Now, I'm not saying that by starting your business you should be running in the red the entire time. The entire nature of running a successful business is for it to start making a profit.

It's the advice given that in order to be successful, you are to continue to take on more debt each month. For myself, this was about finding alternatives to services and tools I had been using or wanting to use in the near future. Would it be a smart business decision to get that $5000 Sawstop industrial cabinet saw? Sure, when the time comes that the production levels are at a point where it would be sound financial sense, but for now it wouldn't be the case.

The case for purchasing things at a level that don't make current business sense will probably be a battle any founder is going to need to fight. Fortunately, there are plenty of good sources to learn from. There is also a lot of bad as well.
